Self-motivation — the ability to motivate yourself — is an important skill. Self-motivation drives people to keep going even in the face of adversities, to take up opportunities, and to show commitment to what they want to achieve. People with self-motivation can find a reason and strength to complete a task, even when challenging, without giving up or needing others to encourage them.
Setting a goal for yourself is helps you to remain motivated all the time. However, it is important to set realistic and achievable goals. Set yourself a deadline by which you intend to achieve these goals. Setting goals is one of the major secrets to achieving your dreams. Writing your goals down and breaking them into smaller tasks makes them easier to execute. Reward yourself when you accomplish each of the smaller tasks.
2. Schedule your goals
Set time frames for your tasks and do them according to it. Work within the time frames for each goal destination, make a note of realistic dates by which you will complete each of the small tasks. Now take an overview of all your goal destinations and make a schedule of what you need to do this week, this month, this year – to progress along the road towards your goal destinations. Write these action points on a schedule so that you have definite dates on which to do things. When you schedule it, you make it happen.
3. Remember Your Why
Even the most enjoyable tasks can sometimes seem like they drag on. Something that you once found joy in seems to have lost its spark. Remember why you are doing it in the first place. I love writing these blog posts. I love blogging, but most of all, I love my readers. When I remember why I am writing, to help and inspire others, the words come much more smoothly. I think it makes for much more interesting posts too. I feel good to know that my posts have helped someone. When you are trying to accomplish a task, remember your why. Often, that’s the inspiration that you need to carry it through.
4. Visualize it
When you visualize accomplishing a task and what it will feel like when you are finished, it motivates you to continue working towards that goal. Visualizing is a powerful self-motivation technique. Our brains are like a supercomputer and what we feed it is the program that it runs. Visualize success and you are much more likely to achieve it.
5. Reward Yourself
Everyone likes rewards. However, when you are a self-motivated person, you do not seek it from others. You reward yourself to motivate yourself. If you’re struggling to accomplish certain tasks, reward yourself upon completion. These rewards can be large or small. For example – a nice dress, a pair of good shoes or a delicious dinner.
Research has shown people are incredibly driven when rewards are given. One study found rewards account for 75% of our “personal motivation toward accomplishments”. Appreciating and rewarding yourself for your achievements is a great motivational tool.6.
6. Positive Self-Talk
Your brain is a supercomputer, and your self-talk is the program that it runs. Self-talk is your internal dialogue. Basically, it’s what you tell yourself. It forms the basis for your beliefs and your beliefs form the basis of your actions. When you tell yourself good things like this very day, especially at the start of the day, we call those affirmations. They are good input that your brain needs to hear to rewire the programming. Positive self-talk help you do better, go further, or just keep moving forward.
7. Stay with positive people
Generally, people with a positive mindset and attitude are the best motivators. The people you spend the majority of your time with will have the biggest influence on your life. If you spend time with people who are constantly talking about their goals and pushing each other to improve rather than gossiping and complaining about their circumstances, you will be more likely to achieve your own goals, and your attitude will improve. Regardless of your situation, they will always try and uplift your state of mind. Such positive minded people will motivate you even if you are feeling low and beaten. Further, whenever you encounter negative thoughts, speak with such people by either meeting them or on phone.
8. Choose to be happy
Now this may sound like a tall order for anyone encountering adverse situations. However, it is worthwhile to note, every bad situation always passes. Nothing lasts forever. No pain. No struggle. No failure. When you feel like something is too much for you to handle, keep in mind that it will soon pass. You can maintain your motivation with the sheer thought that every problem is temporary. Always choose to be happy to beat your blues. Be a warrior, not a worrier.
9. Focus on Solutions
Often, the first thing people do when they face adversity is they focus on the negatives and all of the problems in their lives. Failure and adversity are here to help you, not hurt you. To turn failure into a gift and grow through the tough times instead of just casually going through them, you must begin to start focusing on ways to resolve the situation. The goal here is to be focused on the solution instead of on the problem. It’s easy to stay hung up on problems when times get tough; it’s harder to adjust your perspective and take action to move forward. When Faced With Adversity, Focus on Solutions, Not More Problems.
